Enrolment procedure for students at Hochschule Düsseldorf - University of Applied Sciences

In order to become an HSD student officially, you must enrol at the University, i.e. you must formally accept the place offered to you as the offer can otherwise be withdrawn and the place will then be awarded to another applicant. Together with your Letter of Acceptance or with your enrolment documents, you will receive details of when you should enrol and which documents are required. This notification will include a closing date by which you must have enrolled. This closing date will not be extended.
You can either present your enrolment documents in person or authorize a friend or acquaintance to submit your documents on your behalf. You may also send your documents by post, but please ensure that they arrive at the Student Affairs Office in good time. The date on which the University receives your documents counts - not the postmark!

Please send your documents to:
Hochschule Düsseldorf - University of Applied Sciences
Münsterstr. 156
40476 Düsseldorf

International student usually have to submit the German language certificate with the enrolment papers. Depending on the study programme, you might also have to hand in an English language certificate or the certificate of an internship (authenticated copy).
Once you have successfully enrolled, you will receive your student ID card and travel pass.

De-registration

Studies at HSD end with de-registration, as does membership of the University.

A student is de-registered automatically by HSD when he or she…

  • …has passed the final examination.
  • …has finally failed to pass a subject-related examination or the final examination.
  • …no longer has the required health insurance cover.
  • …fails to re-register before the closing date.

In addition, a student may de-register at any time upon application and stating his or her reasons.

You are thinking about ending your studies without qualifying? Or would you really like to complete your degree but don’t know how and need help? Or have you decided to terminate your studies without obtaining your degree and would like to know if any of your academic achievements can be recognized in the framework of a vocational training programme?

The Central Academic Advice Office at HSD and Heinrich Heine University, the Federal Employment Agency, Düsseldorf Chamber of Skilled Crafts and Düsseldorf Chamber of Commerce and Industry can answer these questions and any others you may have.

All the information you need can be found under “Doubts about studying” (in German).

Leave of absence

Upon application, students can be granted leave of absence if they produce evidence of an important reason. Applications for leave of absence must be submitted to the Student Affairs Office by the start of the lecture period of the following semester.

Considered as important reasons are above all:

  • Pregnancy
  • Parental obligations until a child raised jointly by both parents in the same household reaches the age of eight years
  • Illness
  • Completion of voluntary service
  • Practical placement
  • Care of close relatives

Corresponding evidence of the reason for leave of absence must be submitted together with your application (see Application Form).

Leave is generally granted for the duration of one semester.

Leave of absence for the first subject-related semester can only be granted under very limited circumstances.

Students are not entitled to sit examinations during their leave of absence with the exception of parental leave and care of close relatives. If a student registers for an examination during such leave of absence, then he or she is considered at the same time to have completed a subject-related semester.

Belated applications for leave of absence cannot be accepted.

Cross-registered students

Cross-registered students (“minor”)
What are known as “minor” cross-registered students (“kleine Zweithörer”) are regularly enrolled full-time students who are studying at another university and wish to attend specific complementary courses at HSD. They can be admitted as cross-registered students upon application and provided that sufficient places are available.

This entitles them to:

  • Attend courses
  • Sit examinations during the study programme

To enrol as a “minor” cross-registered student you must apply accordingly using the form on the right under “Important documents”.

The fee for “minor” cross-registered students is € 100 per semester.

Cross-registered students (“major”)
What are known as “major” cross-registered students (“große Zweithörer”) are full-time students enrolled at another university in another study programme. They can be admitted as cross-registered students for a second study programme upon application and provided that sufficient places are available.

This entitles them to:

  • Attend courses
  • Sit examinations
  • Complete their degree

Applicants must fulfil the admission requirements for the respective study programme and be accepted for the programme in the case of study programmes with restricted admission.

Like regular applicants, “major” cross-registered students must apply online to Hochschule Düsseldorf - University of Applied Sciences within the application closing dates.

The closing date for higher subject-related semesters ends on the 15th of March for the summer semester and on the 15th of September for the winter semester. Applications for places are only possible through HSD’s “Applications Portal”.
