Anyone studying in Germany needs adequate health insurance cover
International students must therefore provide proof of health insurance cover that is sufficient for Germany when enrolling at HSD.
If you come from an EU country or from Liechtenstein, Croatia, Macedonia, Norway, Iceland
or Switzerland, health insurance from these countries may be recognised. Recognition is also possible if your insurance from your home country covers potential healthcare costs in Germany.
To have your existing health insurance recognised, you will need the ‘European Health Insurance Card’ or another form of proof of your health insurance from abroad. With this, you can contact any statutory health insurance provider, which will then confirm your adequate insurance cover to the HSD via an electronic notification.
If you are unable to provide proof of valid health insurance from your home country, you must take out health insurance with a German health insurance provider before enrolment.
Choosing health insurance
In Germany, there are two types of health insurance: statutory and private insurance.
Students can be covered by statutory health insurance until they turn 30 or until the end of their 14th semester. Private insurance is only available in exceptional cases.
Please note: Once you have private insurance, you can no longer switch to a statutory health insurance!
In most cases, statutory insurance is the cheaper option. German statutory health insurance funds offer a low-cost student tariff. The premium for this currently amounts to around 120 euros per month.
