​​​​What level of German do I need?​​​

​Further requirements for applying to HSD:

With the exception of the Master’s programme in Mechanical Engineering, all programmes at Hochschule Düsseldorf - University of Applied Sciences are taught in German.

The required level of German depends on the degree programme.

Accepted language certificates



The following are also accepted as alternatives to proof of German language proficiency:

  • school-leaving certificate (Abitur or equivalent qualification) from a German-speaking educational institution
  • successful completion of a Bachelor's or Master's degree programme taught in German
  • successful completion of a vocational training programme of at least two years' duration, governed by federal or state law and conducted in German


Please note:

  • German citizens who obtained their university entrance qualification abroad must also provide proof of language proficiency.
  • alternative language certificates (e.g. internal language exams at other universities) are not accepted.
  • a university degree in German Studies does not count as proof of German language proficiency.​

Further information on the German language requirement is available in the HSD enr​olment regulations (in German), as well as in the respective examination regulation.
If you are unsure whether or not your language certificate is sufficient, please contact the International Office.​

>> When is proof of German language proficiancy required? 

The German language certificate must be uploaded at the time of enrolment. Latest deadline:

  • Winter semester: 30 September
  • Summer semester: 31 March

You can apply via uni-assist even if you don't yet have a German language certificate. 
If you already have one, you can choose to upload it on uni-assist.

HSD does not offer conditional admission.
Enrolment is not possible without the required language certificate.

In cooperation with IIK Düsseldorf, we offer a free German language course through the NRWege ins Studium programme. The course is designed to support prospective students in preparing for academic studies.


Entry requirement: German language level B1
Target level: C1 (including a recognized C1 certification exam)
