Sustainable Stay

At a glance

  • Each of you can make a small contribution in your everyday life to make your stay at Hochschule Düsseldorf as sustainable and climate-friendly as possible.

  • Here you will find helpful tips on how you can make a valuable contribution to sustainability without much effort and can save money at the same time.

  • Students are also invited to get involved in sustainability projects at HSD

Sustainable consumption

Shopping:

You could preferably buy regional and seasonal food. If needed, you could try to buy second-hand home equipment and clothes. Whenever possible, you could buy products without packaging or packed in return packaging. It is best to use your own bag to transport your purchases instead of paying for a paper bag at the supermarket.

Eating:

You could preferably choose vegetarian or vegan meals that are seasonal, local or Fairtrade if possible. The canteen (Mensa) also offers plant-based options. If you eat meat, consider reducing your intake of meat and products of animal origin.

Water consumption:

Tap water in Germany is safe to drink. There are several drinking water dispensers on the HSD campus that you can use to fill up your own bottle instead of buying bottled water. You will find drinking water dispensers almost in every building as well as outside in front of building 2.

Waste reduction and recycling:

You could try to produce as little waste as possible. It is important to know that waste is separated in three or four different colored waste bins: the yellow bin (for plastic waste), the blue bin (for paper waste), the black bin (for household waste) and the brown bin (for organic waste).

You can easily identify recyclable packaging by the green symbol “Grüner Punkt”. We recommend to buy reusable bottles whenever possible. You will get the deposit back when returning them to any store. Returnable bottles are marked with the word “Pfandflasche” and the deposit is usualy 0.25€.

Sustainable projects at HSD

Urban gardening:

HSD has a community garden in the inner courtyard of building 3. Students and employees from various faculties are involved in the self-organised urban gardening group.

Give-box:

The Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences organises an ‘exchange of used items’. Clothing, household goods and media are exchanged. The motto is “give and take”. The give-box is located in bulding no. 3 on the 1st floor.

Foodsharing:

At HSD, there is a food sharing station called ‘Fairteiler-Rad’, located in Building 3, ground floor on the left. It is open to the public and serves to save food from being thrown away, whereby anyone can pick up and bring food free of charge.

Fairtrade university:

The Fairtrade working group has been campaigning for more fairly traded products in the canteen, cafeteria and vending machines since 2017. The group is always looking for committed students.
